Toronto's First Class Fest loses a fifth of its rap festival bill

First Class Fest, the Toronto event that bills itself as Canada's biggest rap festival, went into its opening day having lost about a fifth of its booked line-up at the last minute.

Stereogum reported the dropouts on August 27, the day before the festival was due to begin at the Bowl at Sobey's Stadium. The scale of the loss is unusual this close to doors, and no replacement announcements had been made when the report ran.

The operation behind it is small. Tom Breihan describes First Class as a relatively small outfit founded by two promoters in their early twenties, who have been putting on shows since 2022. This is the first outdoor festival either of them has staged, a considerable jump from indoor club and venue shows.

The programming leans hard in one direction. The bill is built around rage, the chaotic, digitally distorted strain of underground rap that has grown quickly in the last few years, and Breihan's assessment is that the planning has been about as chaotic as the music.

What has not been published is which acts pulled out, or why. That detail sits behind a registration wall on the only outlet reporting the story, and neither the promoters nor the venue had issued a statement when the piece was filed.
