Torture Methods have released RIPPER, REAPER, the first new music under the name since the project's debut four months ago.
The project belongs to Grant Chapman, a New York musician better known to most listeners as the percussionist in Body Meat, the group led by Chris Taylor. Torture Methods is where he works with samples rather than drums, and it sounds nothing like the day job.
The self-titled debut arrived in May, and Stereogum described it as a gothic, glitch-ridden nightmare, though a playful one, closer to a surrealist arthouse film than to anything straightforwardly frightening. That distinction matters for a project whose name invites the wrong expectations: this is disorientating music rather than aggressive music.
RIPPER, REAPER is the follow-up, out on Friday 18 September. A four-month turnaround from debut record to new single is quick for a sample-based project, where the work tends to be slow and the material has to be found before it can be arranged.
No parent album has been announced alongside it, and no release date for one has been given.
