Tricky FM, the San Francisco computer-core project of Hana Freed, has released Apartment, the last single to go out before the album Twin Star Fantasy. The record arrives on 29 September through Cherub Dream Records.
Freed put out her first Tricky FM album in 2023, cutting up samples in Ableton to build what she calls emotional computer core. That record, Peace, Love, Unity, Rave, ran on anger and motion. Twin Star Fantasy takes its energy from somewhere quieter, from relationships and the ordinary business of a day, and she has pointed to The Postal Service and Imogen Heap as the reference points for setting dreamy vocals over sputtering breakbeats.
Apartment follows the earlier singles Sugar in My Drink and Gridlock and closes the run. It comes with a video shot at a county fair, with Freed appearing as a version of herself and Joy Carson playing the Twin Star character the album is named for.
Freed has built the project from the live circuit up, sharing bills with Alice Glass, Molly Nilsson, Mechatok, Otha, Spellling, Salami Rose and Joe Louis, and she designs jewellery alongside the music.
Cherub Dream is a queer and POC-led label based in the Bay Area, with Welcome Strawberry, Christina's Trip and Pocket Full of Crumbs also on its roster, which puts Twin Star Fantasy in a scene rather than out on its own.
The album sits under electronic and indie and is logged with its 29 September date on the release calendar.
