Two AI country acts turn millions of streams into big money

Two AI-generated country acts, Breaking Rust and Cain Walker, have already turned millions of streams into a large payday, Taste of Country reported on August 11. A new study from Kapwing, using data from Songstats, analyzed the most-streamed and top-earning AI music artists across Spotify, YouTube and the charts, and put the two acts' combined earnings at an estimated $731,851.

Breaking Rust has generated 79.4 million Spotify streams and 71.7 million YouTube views, worth an estimated $469,963 across the two platforms, according to Kapwing's analysis.

Cain Walker, who posts under the handle @cainwalkermusic, has built a similarly large audience, with 41.3 million Spotify streams and 45.5 million YouTube views worth an estimated $261,888. A third act, Owen James, who goes by @owenjamesrecords, also stood out in the study: Kapwing counted 494 chart entries for Owen James against 407 for Breaking Rust and 399 for Cain Walker.

AI-generated music has become easy to create through platforms such as Suno, a different issue from AI deepfakes that imitate an existing artist's voice or likeness. Tennessee has already moved to protect performers from unauthorized AI replicas through the ELVIS Act, but entirely AI-generated artists, with no real performer behind the recording, sit outside that kind of protection.

Country music's AI moment is still early, but Breaking Rust and Cain Walker are already showing that entirely artificial artists can draw a real audience and real money in country music.
