UK breakbeat hardcore pioneer Bizzy B, real name Brian Johnson, was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Greenwich for his contribution to music and culture, Mixmag reported. Johnson called it "one of the proudest days of my life" and thanked the community he has worked alongside over more than three decades.
"This honour belongs not just to me, but to everyone I've worked with over the past 35 years," Johnson wrote on Instagram, thanking the university and his family. "I never imagined this day would come, and it's something I'll treasure forever."
He added that he plans to share his full acceptance speech in the coming days for fans who want to watch it.
Johnson started releasing breakbeat hardcore tracks in the early 1990s through his own label, Brain Records, which became closely tied to the genre's early sound. He worked under numerous aliases across that catalog before later forming production duo The Dream Team with fellow producer Pugwash, fusing breaks with ragga vocal samples and the emerging computer technology of the era.
While he stayed active releasing music through the 2010s, Johnson has spent recent years focused on The Bizzy B Science, his YouTube channel of educational music videos.
The university had already documented his career in a 2024 exhibition, Trackers & Breakbeats: Celebrating Brain Records' Underground Revolution.
