Vetusta Morla have put out a single called Si vuelves, ending a break from music that has run for about two and a half years. The band said in 2024 that they would regroup in 2026, and this is them keeping to it.
The title is doing more work than it looks. The song draws on a line from Fernando de los Rios, "Volveremos cuando seamos los propietarios de nuestro manana", and turns it into an argument about returns: coming back is only worth it when you have something worth bringing.
The recording is deliberately unglossed. The six musicians produced it themselves with Hector Reo and cut it live at 5020 Studios in Madrid rather than building it up in layers, which is how the band get the close, human sound they have said they were after. Oscar Clavel mixed and mastered it.
The break itself was the point. Before releasing their album Figurantes, the Tres Cantos band announced they were stopping because of the pace they had been keeping. "Si todo va bien, volveremos a juntarnos en 2026," they wrote at the time, which translates as a plan rather than a promise, and they met it.
What happened next was not a quick reunion single. The six of them met at their rehearsal room at the start of this year and shut themselves in for more than seven months writing, and they say the material from that period will be revealed gradually over the coming weeks.
The video, directed by Ivan Blanco and shot on 16mm, follows two friends and uses their relationship to argue that personal wounds do not define a person and that real friendships are hard to break. Blanco described his approach as treating the body as a surface where the psychological and the social are written.
The band frame all of this around what music does when people are in a room together, whether that is a jam, a studio or a stage. In a world moving too fast to understand, they said, gathering around a song is still one of the more real ways of imagining that things might turn out fine.
