Vortex Jazz Club sets a memorial concert for singer Estelle Kokot

The Vortex Jazz Club in London will host a memorial concert for the late South African jazz singer, pianist and composer Estelle Kokot on September 14, 2026, UK Jazz News reported on August 12. Kokot, who lived from 1962 to 2026, was a regular performer at the venue for decades, both leading her own bands and playing solo sets.

The tribute, billed "Estelle Kokot Remembered," comes from writer and musician Kate Shortt, who called it a chance for "catharsis and poignant excitement" after 16 years of friendship and shared stages with Kokot, describing their bond as full of "deep friendship, endless laughs, collaboration and imparted knowledge."

The evening will mix spoken word with live jazz from musicians connected to Kokot's career, including Cleveland Watkiss, Christine Tobin, Phil Robson, Eugene Skeef, and Larraine and Roger Odell. Doors open at 7:30pm ahead of an 8pm start, with tickets priced at 16.50 pounds.

All proceeds will go to the London Music Fund, which supports under-represented young musicians. UK Jazz News described Kokot herself as "a wise, musically unique, free thinker, activist, songwriter and great cook."

Kokot's death was first reported in February, and the September 14 memorial is among the more prominent tributes to her since, drawing together several of the musicians and friends who shared the stage with her at the Vortex over the years. The show is now listed on the tour guide alongside other upcoming dates.
