Worm turned their KEXP In-Studio session into something that looks like it was pulled off a video store shelf. Metal Injection wrote the performance up on August 22, and described the Seattle station's footage of the Florida black doom band as grainy, ritualistic and dropped squarely into 1991 rather than shot as a clean modern studio video.
KEXP's In-Studio series is one of the station's best-known formats, and Metal Injection framed the treatment as a makeover of a standard studio session into something closer to found footage. The band did not change what they play for it, only how the tape looks coming back out.
The timing is not accidental. Necropalace, the band's new album, is out on Century Media, and Metal Injection's own review called the record theatrical and bombastic, compared its atmosphere to the score of a horror video game, and picked out a guest appearance by the shred guitarist Marty Friedman as one of its standout moments.
That review traces the band's range across a wide slice of extreme metal history, from the grandiosity of 1990s symphonic black metal to the technical fire of 1980s shred, and argues that Necropalace pulls both together into something that plays more like an artifact than a new release. A deliberately degraded 1991 video is the same idea aimed at a camera.
Worm are on the road almost immediately. A North American run with Cradle of Filth opens September 29 at The Observatory North Park in San Diego and works through Phoenix, Portland, Seattle, Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal before ending October 22 at Warsaw in Brooklyn. That follows a sold-out Total Possession of America tour. A UK and European leg with Wolves in the Throne Room starts October 24 at Samhain Festival in Maastricht, takes in Damnation Festival in Manchester on November 8 and O2 Academy Islington the night after, and finishes November 14 at John Dee in Oslo.
