YNW Melly released Collect Call II on 28 August, nine tracks put out from behind bars while he waits on a retrial in his double murder case.
He has been in custody since 2019. Seven years on there is still no verdict, the first trial ended without one, and the retrial has yet to produce a resolution either. The legal process has moved slowly enough that the sequence of releases has become the main public record of where he is.
The features complicate the timeline. Ty Dolla $ign appears on Late Night, King Von and Fredo Bang share Casket, and Hotboii turns up on Switcharoo. HotNewHipHop, reviewing the album, noted it is unclear when any of these songs were actually recorded, which is the standing question with material released by an artist who has not been in a studio in years.
The tracklist runs T.T.F.U, Late Night, Casket, Him, OMG, From The Jump, Switcharoo, My Love and Different Seasons. It is a short, focused record rather than a vault dump, and the melodic delivery that made him one of the most commercially promising hip-hop artists of the late 2010s is intact on it.
That is the uncomfortable part of listening to it. He had the industry's full attention when the case began, and Collect Call II lands as a reminder of a career that stopped at its peak rather than declined into one. The album is logged on the release calendar.
