American Football, the emo and post-rock band, announces return to Argentina

American Football will return to Argentina on Wednesday, December 2, playing C Art Media in Buenos Aires to present its new studio album, according to Indie Hoy. Tickets are already on sale through Passline, with payment plans including six interest-free installments for Visa Galicia cardholders. The show follows the band's first-ever run in the country in 2023, which Indie Hoy described as a success.

American Football's own story is one of long gaps and late arrivals. The band formed in 1999 and released a self-titled debut that fused emo with post-rock, a combination rare enough at the time that the record earned a spot alongside cult albums like Slint's Spiderland and Codeine's The White Birch. That lineup, guitarist Mike Kinsella, Steve Holmes and Steve Lamos, broke up soon after.

Fifteen years passed before the band reunited as a quartet in 2016, adding Nate Kinsella and releasing the critically praised American Football (LP2). Even then, Nate has said the group felt unfinished: "We were discovering what we wanted. For me, it wasn't fully finished. We could still improve." That search led to a third album, recorded with longtime producer Jason Cupp at the same Omaha studio, Arc Studios, but with the band deliberately giving songs more room to develop at their own pace. LP3 featured Hayley Williams of Paramore and Elizabeth Powell of Land of Talk.

The band's fourth studio album arrived this year, described by Indie Hoy as darker and more mature, blending post-hardcore, math rock, jazz and shoegaze, with additional guest turns from Brendan Yates of Turnstile, Wisp and Caithlin De Marrais. The record is being read as proof the group can keep evolving rather than repeat old formulas, and the December date gives Argentine fans a chance to hear it live.

American Football has not announced further South American dates beyond the Buenos Aires show. The band's history of multi-year gaps between releases and tours means fans hoping for additional stops may be waiting a while for word one way or the other.
