Amy Winehouse's Back to Black gets a three-disc 20th anniversary reissue

Back to Black is getting the full anniversary treatment. Amy Winehouse's second album, released in the UK in October 2006, will be reissued on October 23 in a package that runs to three discs: the original record, a disc of B-sides, demos and extra material, and a concert recorded in Amsterdam in 2007. Rolling Stone en Espanol's Kory Grow reported the details on August 27.

The formats fan out from there. There is a three-CD set and a three-LP edition on clear vinyl, plus a zoetrope pressing of the original album, the kind that produces an optical illusion of movement as the record spins, and a CD version exclusive to Amazon.

The new material around the music is where the archive work shows. The set carries fresh liner notes with comments from Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi, the two producers who shaped the record, along with unpublished photographs by Mischa Richter and Alex Lake, whose art direction was part of the original design. Ronson also pulled images of Winehouse's handwritten lyric sheets out of his own archive.

Both producers spoke about it in the terms people still use about her. Ronson called it strange that six songs written in a burst of furious creativity still matter this much to this many people two decades on. Remi described her as unrepeatable, a singular artist and spirit, and called being close to that level of talent and honesty a gift.

The second disc is the one collectors will read first. It gathers the Valerie session from BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge, Cupid, Monkey Man, Hey Little Rich Girl, You're Wondering Now, To Know Him Is to Love Him, the Ghostface Killah version of You Know I'm No Good, Do Me Good and Close to the Front, alongside original demos of Rehab, Back to Black and Love Is a Losing Game and early versions of You Know I'm No Good, Me & Mr Jones and Just Friends under different titles.

Disc three is a full show from Paradiso in Amsterdam on February 8, 2007, running from Addicted through Rehab, Love Is a Losing Game and Valerie. The rollout has already begun with a demo of Tears Dry issued as a single. The record was an immediate hit on release, entering the UK chart at number three before reaching the top and going 15 times platinum, and it reached number two in the US, where it is certified double platinum.
