AZ Chike releases his major-label debut album, No Rest For The Wicked

AZ Chike has released No Rest For The Wicked, and it is his first record aimed squarely at an audience beyond the one he built himself. Stereogum files it as a major-label debut, which is the significant detail: the South Central Los Angeles rapper has been making reckless, high-energy underground records for years without that machinery behind him.

The moment that got him in front of a wider audience came a couple of years ago, when he traded bars with Kendrick Lamar on Peekaboo. Stereogum's Tom Breihan describes the chemistry between them as the chocolate-and-peanut-butter kind, two things that have no business working together and do.

That verse is also the source of the one complaint attached to this release. Breihan says people were already lamenting the absence of a Kendrick feature on the new album before most of them had finished listening to it. His own view is that the worry is misplaced and that AZ Chike can move up a level on his own.

What has not been published is almost everything else. No label is named in either write-up, no track list has gone out, and no guest credits have been announced, so the record is currently doing its work without any of the supporting information a major release usually arrives with.

He spent the run-up to it building outward rather than waiting. He teamed with Tyler, The Creator on the single Look Like My Mama, and the pair then restaged two films in the video for it, which is a long way from where an underground Los Angeles rapper usually gets to operate.
