Bad Waitress have a second album on the way. In The Hollow lands on October 30 through Stomp Records, five years after the Toronto quartet's debut No Taste, and the lead single Lovin' Kind is already out.
The band have released the odd standalone single since 2021, but nothing at album length, and they describe the record as the product of a stretch of collective and personal isolation. "The songs sit inside the messier part," they said in a statement, before adding that the writing was about working out what still belongs to you and what does not.
Lyrically the album deals with relationships, identity and sexuality. Its imagery comes from further west than the city they live in now: members grew up in the Northwest Territories and the Pacific Northwest before moving to Toronto, and that landscape works its way into the writing.
The band produced In The Hollow themselves and recorded with engineer Josh Korody at Wychwood Sound in Toronto. The finished collection runs to ten tracks and arrives on October 30 via Stomp Records, and the press notes frame it as taking their existing art punk somewhere darker and more inward looking rather than louder.
Bad Waitress came up through Toronto's DIY scene and have shared stages with Fucked Up, L7 and Rise Against, which is a fair summary of the range they draw on. Lovin' Kind is the eerier end of it, all splintered guitar and space, rather than the flat out attack the band are usually associated with.
The record joins a busy autumn for rock and punk releases, including the Garden's Bootleg and a run of reissues such as the Descendents' Liveage!. Release dates for the months ahead are collected on the release calendar.
