Beyonce is marking 20 years of B'Day with an expanded edition timed to September 4, which is also her 45th birthday. The reissue takes the original 10 song album out to 27 tracks, pulling in B sides, Spanish language recordings and the songs that were once locked behind individual retailers.
B'Day came out in the summer of 2006 as her second solo album, went to number one, and has since been certified quintuple platinum by the RIAA. Its first run carried Irreplaceable, Deja Vu and Ring the Alarm, and a deluxe edition released months later added Beautiful Liar with Shakira and helped push Get Me Bodied onto the charts.
The reason there is so much to gather is that albums in 2006 shipped in a spread of formats, including versions built for big box chains that no longer exist. The new edition brings back Back Up from the Circuit City release, Creole from the Japanese edition and Lost Yo Mind from the iTunes version, among others.
Spanish language material makes up another block of it. Selections from the Irreemplazable EP, released in 2007, sit alongside the album proper. The one genuinely recent inclusion is Morning Dew (Donk), which arrived on the Fourth of July this year and is the only song here that was not made around the original sessions.
Physical buyers get a choice of three tiers. There is a CD, an abridged two disc version, and a four LP edition pressed on bayou blue vinyl with a 60 page booklet and two prints, priced two cents under $150. Full details sit on her own webstore rather than with a retail partner.
The anniversary run has already produced headlines of its own, including the moment Jay-Z turned up on a surprise Morning Dew (Donk) remix, and the earlier reveal when Beyonce showed the cover art and tracklist for the B'Day anniversary edition. Both fed the same pop rollout this reissue closes out.
