Virgin Music Group has signed a global distribution deal with the Indian label Sur Music World, announced on Monday, August 17 and reported by Music Business Worldwide. The agreement covers the label's Bhojpuri and regional Indian music, with Virgin handling distribution worldwide alongside audience engagement and digital marketing.
Virgin is the independent artist and label services division of Universal Music Group, and the announcement described it as one of the world's leading partners to independent music entrepreneurs. It has been staffing up as well as signing: Syaheed MSBI took a vice president job at the company.
Sur Music World Pvt. Ltd. was founded in 2019 by Surinder Yadav. The Mumbai company started in South Indian entertainment content, picking up Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam film titles for digital release, and moved into music in 2023 with a focus on Bhojpuri repertoire.
Nagesh Jadhav, senior content manager for music and video at Virgin Music Group, named Pawan Singh, Shilpi Raj, Pramod Premi Yadav, Arvind Akela Kallu and Khushi Kakkar among the label's Bhojpuri artists. "We're excited to get started and look forward to expanding the global reach of Bhojpuri music together," he said.
Neither company disclosed the term or the financial details. The announcement carried a statement praising Virgin attributed to the owner of Sur Music World, who is not named in it. The label said it wants to expand into Hindi, Haryanvi, Punjabi, Marathi and Magahi repertoire.
The deal continues a run of Virgin partnerships aimed at India's regional music. It signed Punjabi singer Sunanda Sharma in May for global distribution of her future releases, starting with the single Jogi, and Gujarati folk singer Rajesh Ahir in June in a deal covering both his future work and his catalog. Further back, Virgin struck a global distribution deal with Hungama Digital Media in December 2024 and acquired Outdustry, a services and rights business working across China and India, six weeks before that.
The division has been busy elsewhere too. Evan Bogart's Seeker Music Group, whose catalog runs to more than 19,000 copyrights and recordings valued at $400 million, signed for global distribution in June, following an April agreement with Suede Records. Universal completed its $775 million acquisition of Downtown Music Holdings through Virgin in February, on a European Commission condition that it divest Downtown's Curve royalty accounting business, a sale Jamen Capital and Merlin said they completed on August 18. Virgin is not the only rights company buying into Indian regional repertoire: Reservoir's PopIndia acquired the Vincey Productions catalog, more than three decades of South Indian music.
