Boy George has threatened to fire members of Culture Club, the pop band he fronts, if they refuse to perform his song "We Will Dance Again," which has divided listeners since its release last month for a stance that appears to reject describing Israel's military campaign in Gaza as genocide, while also criticizing musicians who have publicly supported Palestine.
"The truth is if I tried to write 'We Will Dance Again' with any musician, they would have got in my way," George said on Instagram. "Even now the song is written, there are people in my band who are questioning whether they'll perform it with me. And those people will be fired." He said the song was inspired by his visit to the Nova Music Festival Exhibition in London and meetings with people affected by the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack.
George has framed the song as "pro-peace" following backlash, and has separately voiced support for Jewish communities, including sharing a message of solidarity at a London antisemitism march in May. He credited AI with helping him finish the song without creative gatekeepers: "I don't need gatekeepers, and one of the great things about AI is that it removes all the interference, all the human interference," he said, adding that he wrote both the song's lyrics and melody himself.
The controversy has already cost George two working relationships: he pulled out of a two-week run playing King Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar at the London Palladium, and parted ways with his record label manager after the manager refused to release the track. He has also publicly clashed with Bandcamp over the song, accusing the platform of "bowing to the pressure of antisemites."
The song has drawn condemnation from other musicians: Heaven 17 and Human League co-founder Martyn Ware called it an "overtly pro-genocide, anti-Palestinian piece of musical propaganda," and actor Patrick Clanton, who appeared alongside George in the Broadway production of Moulin Rouge!, said he was "embarrassed" to have worked with him. George's Culture Club bandmates have not publicly responded to his comments.
