Brittany Howard came out during Tedeschi Trucks Band's set at Acrisure Amphitheater in Grand Rapids on the evening of 25 August 2026 and sang Everyday People with Susan Tedeschi. Alabama Shakes were opening, and this was the third of four nights they spent on the Future Soul Tour. It was the first time the two bands had actually shared a stage across that run.
The song did not stand alone. Tedeschi Trucks Band, a twelve-piece, have been running You Can Make It If You Try straight into Everyday People, and Howard walked on inside that medley rather than for a standalone guest spot. Alabama Shakes' touring singers Shanay Johnson and Karita Law held the backing vocals through the whole Sly and the Family Stone stretch, so the collaboration was closer to two bands merging than one singer visiting.
That medley is a recent addition. Tedeschi Trucks Band premiered the pairing on 11 March during their 2026 residency at the Beacon Theatre in New York, and both songs made their debut with the band that night. It has stayed in the book since, sitting alongside another Sly medley the group already played, Sing A Simple Song running into I Want To Take You Higher, both from Stand!
The rest of the Grand Rapids set was unusually heavy on other people's songs. After opening with Hear My Dear and Playing With My Emotions, the band worked through Ann Cole's Got My Mo-Jo Working, Chuck Willis' I Feel So Bad and Keep On Growing by Derek and the Dominos. The Sly sequence followed Take Me As I Am, and the night closed with I Want More running into Santana's Soul Sacrifice, by way of Made Up Mind, Midnight In Harlem and the Allman Brothers Band's Stand Back.
Alabama Shakes have had a busy year of their own: they returned with I Must Be Dreaming, their first album in a decade, and Howard has talked through how the reunion actually started. Guests are routine for the headliners as well, who brought out Lukas Nelson and Alam Khan in Berkeley earlier in the run. The rock and rnb-soul rails carry both bands, and dates sit in the tour guide.
The pairing had one night left. Alabama Shakes finished with Tedeschi Trucks Band on 26 August at Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati, and Lukas Nelson picked support back up from 28 August through 2 September.
