Festival Escenario returns to Buenos Aires for its seventh edition, running from Sunday August 30 to Sunday September 6 across several cinemas in the city. Most of the programme is free to attend, subject to the capacity of each room.
The bill mixes Argentine and foreign productions, features and shorts, works in progress and recent releases, with music from Leonard Cohen, Indio Solari, the Beastie Boys, Carca and even Spinal Tap. Rolling Stone en Espanol picked out ten titles as the ones to catch.
Among them is Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man, Lian Lunson's record of the January 2005 tribute concert at the Sydney Opera House with Nick Cave, Jarvis Cocker, Beth Orton and Rufus Wainwright, plus a Cohen performance with U2 filmed in New York.
Two documentaries dig into cult American acts. Fugs Film! traces the anarchic folk and proto-punk band formed by beat poets, with archive shot by Jonas Mekas and Ken Jacobs; We are The Shaggs revisits the Wiggin sisters and their 1969 album Philosophy of the World, a record Lester Bangs once placed alongside Blonde on Blonde.
The Argentine strand includes El camino contrario on the obscure post-punk band El Corte, and Principe oscuro, on Carca, directed by Camilo De Cabo and Nicanor Loreti. Carca will play a set alongside that screening at the Colegio de Abogados.
Other selections cover Jason Molina, in a portrait made by his friend Tommy Nickoloff; a Michael Gira solo show filmed by C. S. Nicholson; the French-Chilean band Panico; the cumbia digital label ZZK Records in Ritmos bastardos; and Tamra Davis's Beastie Boys road film The Best Summer.
The festival closes with Tsunami, un oceano de gente, Julio Leiva and Maximiliano Diaz's 2016 film of Indio Solari's last concert in Tandil, screening in a cinema for the first time at the Gaumont. That closing screening is the one with a ticket price. The event is logged on the festival tracker, and it lands in a busy Argentine rock calendar alongside Primavera Sound Buenos Aires.
