Pop singer Carly Rae Jepsen and Lena Dunham's "10 Things" musical sets a Broadway date

Pop singer Carly Rae Jepsen and filmmaker Lena Dunham's stage musical reimagining of 10 Things I Hate About You now has a Broadway date, with performances set to begin August 17, 2027, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The show adapts the 1999 teen comedy that starred the late Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, itself a modern retelling of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew set in a Seattle-area high school.

The original film followed sisters Kat and Bianca Stratford, played by Stiles and Larisa Oleynik, through the social minefield of teenage dating and parental rules. The musical marks something of a homecoming for Jepsen: she made her own Broadway debut in 2014, starring in the musical Cinderella just as she was coming off the success of "Call Me Maybe" and working on her critically beloved album E-MO-TION.

Jepsen is writing the musical's score with Grammy-winning songwriter and producer Ethan Gruska, while Dunham is co-writing the book alongside playwright Jessica Huang. Two-time Tony Award winner Christopher Wheeldon will direct and choreograph, with two-time Tony and Grammy winner Tom Kitt serving as music supervisor, arranger and orchestrator. Casting and a theater have not yet been announced.

The Broadway news lands weeks before Jepsen puts out new music of her own. Her next album, Day and Night, is a 24-track double record split evenly between daytime and after-dark songs, due September 18 through Interscope. The pairing of a stage adaptation and a sprawling new pop album shows how far Jepsen has moved past her "Call Me Maybe" breakout into scoring and producing work outside her own catalog.

Further details on casting, the theater and ticket dates are expected as the production moves toward its 2027 opening.
