Carnifex have announced More Than Misery, their new album, due November 6 through Sumerian Records. The deathcore band put the title track and its video out with the announcement, a blast-heavy song built on harmonised guitar leads and Scott Ian Lewis's growl.
Lewis framed the record around what damage does rather than what it costs. "This is Carnifex at our most honest and unapologetically brutal," he said, describing an album about suffering that stops being something a person endures and becomes something that changes them.
The band worked with a new team on it. More Than Misery was recorded with Whitechapel guitarist Zach Householder in Tennessee and mixed by Jeff Dunne, whose credits take in Make Them Suffer, Knocked Loose, Emmure and Crystal Lake. The stated aim is a return to the death metal and first-wave deathcore they started from, rebuilt with the melodic atmospheres they have picked up since.
The tracklist runs ten songs, opening with "...and I Held Hands With Death" and the title track, and taking in "The Process Of Pain" with Chaney Crabb, "No Gods Only Graves," "Coffin Crowned King," "Roses & Rotting Corpses," "Only The Dead," "Gothic Serpent," "Heart Made Of Teeth" and "Licking Love From A Knife."
Metal Injection, which broke the announcement, is selling an exclusive vinyl variant through its own store, limited to 100 copies in red, black and gold with black splatter. That is a small enough pressing to function as a collector item rather than a distribution channel.
The touring starts before the record does. Carnifex head out with All Shall Perish in early September on a North American run that reaches Furnace Fest in Birmingham, Alabama on October 11, with a set of headline dates alongside Mauled folded into the schedule. The album is filed under metal, and its date sits on the release calendar. Deathcore has had a strange year in our coverage, from Alex Terrible putting a deathcore vocal on Korn's Freak on a Leash to Serena Cherry of Svalbard building a metal album out of Elden Ring.
