Carrie Underwood sings two Guns N' Roses songs at the band's Atlanta concert

Guns N' Roses brought Carrie Underwood out at Truist Park in Atlanta on Saturday 19 September, and she took the same two songs she has taken before: Sweet Child o' Mine and Paradise City. The performance was filmed from the crowd and circulated over the weekend, and by Monday it had become the peg for a much older question about what she does next.

The pairing is not new. Axl Rose joined Underwood at the Stagecoach festival in 2022, and later that year she came out with Guns N' Roses when Rose was dealing with vocal trouble, singing those two songs then as well. She went on to tour with the band in 2023, which is where most of the footage people cite comes from.

Atlanta was a substantial night in its own right. The band opened with Welcome To The Jungle from their 1987 debut Appetite For Destruction and worked through You Could Be Mine, Civil War and November Rain, alongside their cover of Paul McCartney's Live and Let Die. They also played two Black Sabbath covers, Junior's Eyes and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, and Duff McKagan led the group through the Misfits song Attitude. Slash took his customary solo spot after Civil War.

What makes this appearance different from the earlier ones is the context sitting behind it. Taste of Country points out that the show came one day after TMZ reported Underwood was leaning on Rose for advice, and the outlet has continued to report that she is working on a rock album. Underwood herself has said nothing about her next record, let alone that it will move away from the country and Christian material she has built a career on.

The circumstantial case keeps growing anyway. On 5 September she played the Velocity Festival in Dyersville, Iowa, and worked through nu-metal songs by Limp Bizkit and Papa Roach plus hits by Collective Soul and Linkin Park. Atlanta was the second time in a month she had stood on stage singing rock music that was not hers. Her last album, Denim & Rhinestones, came out in 2022, which is a long gap by her standards, and there is precedent for the move: Taste of Country points to Dolly Parton's 2023 rock album as the obvious comparison.

Underwood marked the night on social media by thanking Axl Rose, Duff McKagan, Slash, Dizzy Reed and the rest of the crew for having her, and for "letting me try and keep up on stage." It is a generous line from a singer who has plainly stopped needing to keep up with that catalogue; the video shows her taking full ownership of both songs.

Guns N' Roses are still touring on their own account, with the rest of 2026 booked across India, Singapore and Australia, and the run is logged on the tour guide with the rest of the rock and country schedule. The band has made a habit of pulling singers out of other genres this year: in August Chris Stapleton traded guest spots with them in Canada. Underwood, meanwhile, has her own standing commitment on the other side of the line, having sung the NFL theme on NBC for a fourteenth season.
