Chappell Roan joins Noah Kahan onstage at the Rose Bowl for a surprise 'California' duet

Chappell Roan made a surprise appearance during Noah Kahan's sold-out show at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on August 15, joining him for a duet of her song "California." More than 56,000 fans packed the stadium for what outlets called Kahan's biggest headlining performance to date, part of a 27-song set on his The Great Divide Tour.

"California" comes from Roan's 2023 debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess and is about her leaving her home in Missouri to build a career in Los Angeles, a detail outlets called a fitting choice for the Los Angeles-area show. Kahan introduced the song by explaining what it meant to him: "This is the first song I ever heard of Kayleigh's," he said, "and the reason I fell in love with her music." He added, "I'm just really proud of her and thankful that she would come sing with me." Roan thanked him in turn: "Noah always stands up for me, he's a good person, for real," before the two performed the song together on acoustic guitar.

Kahan set up the moment with some showmanship of his own, reflecting on his path from playing tiny venues to filling a stadium. "I remember playing at Troubadour and being happy if that was the rest of my career," he told the crowd, referencing the 500-capacity West Hollywood club. During his usual mid-show bit of picking up a prop payphone to talk to "God," he joked about whether, given it was his biggest headline show ever, he should bring out a "super special guest."

Kahan has publicly supported Roan multiple times before, including co-headlining with her at Iowa's Hinterland Festival in 2024 and matching her $25,000 donation to a musicians' healthcare fund last year.

The Rose Bowl date came amid extraordinary demand for The Great Divide World Tour, which is sold out in its entirety across North America, Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Europe; the North American onsale alone moved more than a million tickets instantly. Kahan's spring album The Great Divide has since gone Platinum, and 2022's Stick Season, his breakthrough, is now 4x-Platinum. He recently made history at Boston's Fenway Park with four sold-out shows, the first artist ever to do so there, and was inducted into the venue's Fenway Music Hall of Fame.

Kahan's touring success has also fueled his mental health advocacy through the Busyhead Project, the nonprofit he founded in 2023 to expand access to mental health resources and reduce stigma. It has raised nearly $7 million so far, with the current tour expected to add roughly $2 million more in partnership with Live Nation, and Kahan will headline the nonprofit's second annual Folk & Fairways benefit and golf tournament September 14-15 in Stowe, Vermont.

Roan is set to play Olivia Rodrigo's all-female Daisy Chain Fields festival in California on August 29, and will hold a two-night fundraiser called the Super Graphic Spectacular on October 21 and 22 at Los Angeles's Shrine Auditorium, benefiting her Midwest Princess Project, a nonprofit she launched in 2025 that provides fostering care, connection and resources to trans youth, adding to a busy stretch for both artists in pop and indie music this year.
