Pop star Charli XCX brought her complete "Music, Fashion, Film" set to Lollapalooza for the first time on Friday, July 31, topping the bill alongside the Smashing Pumpkins at the Chicago festival, NME reported. She opened with "Rock Music," "Yeah" and the "Brat" fan favorite "Apple," before working through Brat-era staples including "Guess," "Von Dutch," "360" and "365." During "Guess," she nodded to the song's Billie Eilish-starring music video by showering the crowd with women's underwear.
The set also carried two live debuts: "House" and "Dying for You," both pulled from her soundtrack to the recent "Wuthering Heights" remake, had never been performed live before. "House" featured a voiceover from John Cale piped through the speakers alongside a staged downpour of rain during its chorus. Charli closed the night with the first full rendition of "No One Lasts Forever," playing audio narration from David Cronenberg over the closing bars.
The Lollapalooza slot capped a busy stretch for Charli, who had previewed songs from the new album at smaller shows in Brooklyn, London and Nashville in the weeks before, and made a surprise appearance earlier in the Lollapalooza week as a guest during Lorde's set for their 2024 "Brat" remix collaboration, "Girl, So Confusing."
NME gave "Music, Fashion, Film" a four-star review, calling it a "celebration of art, and its capacity to let you transcend your bounds for something new, feels urgent and timeless." Charli is set to make her headline debut at Reading and Leeds festivals later this month before launching a North American arena tour in September, a run already generating headlines of its own in Pop star Charli XCX releases limited $25 Angel tickets for her North American tour.
