Producer Dahi has announced his debut album, Black Boy (Alternative), and released its new single "Square Up" featuring Fousheé, The Line of Best Fit reported on August 4. The album brings together Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino, Vince Staples, Channel Tres, Ravyn Lenae, Baby Rose, Moses Sumney and Amber Mark across its eleven tracks.
Dahi is known for his hip-hop production work with artists including Kendrick Lamar, Steve Lacy, Madonna, Mac Miller and Sampha, and on "Square Up" he describes his own sound as "Black Radiohead," combining his production with Fousheé's vocals to reframe Black identity as self-defined.
HotNewHipHop described "Square Up" as a haunting track built on skeletal, late-night-drive production, with Fousheé's vocals matching its unsettled mood.
The rollout has moved quickly: Kendrick Lamar's appearance on the record was first confirmed on July 9, followed a day later by "Running," an earlier single pairing Dahi with Childish Gambino, before "Square Up" arrived as the album's newest preview.
Dahi previewed the album live last Saturday at Sister Dreamer in Los Angeles, where several collaborators including Childish Gambino, Vince Staples, Ravyn Lenae and Channel Tres joined him on stage. Black Boy (Alternative) is due August 28 via ALTER Music, joining the rest of the month's releases at the release calendar.
