Fine will release Jazz Dreams, her second album, on October 23 through the Danish label Escho. She produced, recorded and mixed all thirteen songs herself, and has shared "Everything in the Shade" as the first cut from it.
The record is built as a collage rather than a straight line. Scenes, stories and separate musical ideas are stitched into a dreamlike sequence, and Clash reached for Paul's Boutique, the melodic directness of Carole King and both halves of Scott Walker's career to describe where it lands.
"It's cruel, but it's also freeing," Fine said of working that way, having described the making of records as something other than linear, where a strange idea can be thrown into a room and simply accepted.
Jazz Dreams follows Rocky Top Ballads, her 2024 debut, and took roughly sixteen months to come together. Early versions of the songs turned up in her live sets, while demos and alternate takes surfaced through her NTS residency before prelude singles including "I Could" and "Portal" went out.
"Everything in the Shade" is the piano-led overture of the set, closer to classic songwriting in its bones than the electronics elsewhere in her catalogue. The album sits between indie songwriting and the jazz phrasing its title points at, and the October date is on the release calendar.
