Death Cab for Cutie book a 2027 tour and share the Stone Over Water video

Death Cab for Cutie have laid out a 2027 North American tour, and it is a long one. The run opens in Honolulu at the Blaisdell Arena on 19 January, then picks up properly in Nashville on 11 March and works east and north until it finishes at Asheville's ExploreAsheville.com Arena on 16 April.

The dates continue the campaign for I Built You a Tower, the band's album on ANTI-. That campaign has already taken them through the UK, Europe, Japan and Australia this autumn, with a one-off Chicago show at the Salt Shed on 21 November sitting between the overseas leg and the new year.

The itinerary has some substantial rooms in it. There are two-night stands at The Eastern in Atlanta on 14 and 15 March and at MGM Music Hall at Fenway in Boston on 7 and 8 April, plus New Orleans' Saenger Theatre, Detroit's Masonic Temple and a New York night at Radio City Music Hall on 13 April. Three Canadian dates sit in the middle of April. The band play the OLG Stage at Fallsview Casino in Niagara Falls on 3 April, Ottawa's History on 4 April and Montreal's MTELUS on 5 April, which Pitchfork notes puts one of the shows practically on the border itself.

Tickets go on sale in stages. An artist presale opens on Wednesday 23 September at 10am local time, a local presale follows on Thursday 24 September, and general sale starts on Friday 25 September, all at the same hour.

The video that came with the announcement is not what a tour clip usually looks like. Musician and animator Sean Solomon created and directed the piece for Stone Over Water, using slapstick cartoon humour against a song the band describe as being for anyone who has tried to convince themselves and everybody else that they are fine when they are not.

Solomon said he normally animates videos for his own songs but found this one personal anyway, and that he wanted the clip to land somewhere positive despite the subject. He built it around a small character having a bad day and inspired the look by cartoonists including Sergio Aragones of MAD, turning the ending into a point about helping other people as a way out of your own head.

The 2027 run follows two years of anniversary touring for Transatlanticism and Plans, so this is the first sustained stretch the band have spent on current material rather than the back catalogue.
