Djrum will helm the next edition of DJ-Kicks, the long-running mix series, with the release set for October 16. The UK producer brings his all-vinyl three-deck approach to it, a method that keeps the human decisions audible rather than smoothing them out.
"I like things to be a bit bumpy," he said of the way he selects, adding that he wants ups and downs and a set that plays against expectations. The finished mix bears that out across 33 tracks.
Four of those are entirely new Djrum productions that have never been released anywhere else, among them "Turning", "Psychic Video", "Leave Me Alone" and "To Do What To Do". "Psychic Video" is out now as a preview of the set.
The tracklist also carries exclusives from Skee Mask and Clark, and reaches well outside club music for the rest. Chris Watson field recordings appear four times, including a Glastonbury ocean soundscape and a cheetah resting by a baobab tree, and there are cuts from Venetian Snares, Susumu Yokota, The Raincoats, emptyset, Eli Keszler and upsammy.
It closes on a remix of Actual Proof's "Maybe We'll Stay" after passing through Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids, Kimyan Law, Bugge Wesseltoff and a track credited to a row of vertical bars, which is roughly the range the mix operates across.
Djrum plays London's Waterworks Festival on September 13 ahead of the release. The mix follows his I Wander EP for Houndstooth and lands squarely in electronic territory, with the October date logged on the release calendar.
