Dolly Parton died on August 25 at 80, and within a day her catalogue was the busiest in the world. Luminate data reported by Consequence on September 1 has her drawing 79.7 million on-demand audio streams globally on August 26, which made her the most-streamed artist anywhere for that day.
The numbers moved while everyone was reporting them, which is worth saying plainly. Rolling Stone's Maya Georgi, writing on August 27 from an earlier Luminate cut, had a 2,222 percent US rise measured from Monday, August 24, and NME put the gain at 2,056 percent. Consequence's later figures show 30.5 million US streams on the day she died against 1.2 million the day before, a 2,458 percent jump, and 46.3 million the day after that. Worldwide, the count went from 2.5 million on August 24 to 41.8 million on August 25 before the 79.7 million peak.
Jolene led every version of the count. In the US it went from roughly 196,000 streams on the Monday to 3.3 million on Tuesday and 4 million on Wednesday. 9 to 5 followed the same curve, from about 209,000 to 3 million to 3.6 million. Islands in the Stream, her duet with Kenny Rogers, reached 2.9 million by Wednesday, and her own recording of I Will Always Love You, the song she gave to Whitney Houston, hit 2.8 million.
That has turned into chart positions rather than a spike that vanished. Five Parton songs entered the Billboard Global 200: Jolene at No. 16, 9 to 5 at No. 25, Islands in the Stream at No. 43, I Will Always Love You at No. 55 and Here You Come Again at No. 133.
The album charts moved too. Ultimate Dolly Parton, the 2003 greatest-hits collection, re-entered the Billboard 200 at No. 5 with 59,000 equivalent album units. The compilation had peaked at No. 112 on its original run and had not been on the chart since 2020, and its return gives Parton the second-highest-charting album of her career.
Physical and digital sales rose alongside the streams, with Rolling Stone reporting 7,300 products sold in the US on the day she died. Jolene first put her on the Billboard Hot 100 back in 1973.
