E-40 drops Turning My Money Over, billed as a quadruple album

E-40 released Turning My Money Over on 28 August, forty songs broken into four ten-track parts and marketed as a quadruple album. At an age when most of his contemporaries release one record every three years, he has put out the equivalent of four at once.

The guest list is the length of a festival bill. Larry June, Juvenile, Havoc, Busta Rhymes, Anderson .Paak, Al B. Sure!, Killer Mike, Kokane, Peezy, Curren$y's Bay Area counterparts and a long list of regional names all turn up, and almost none of them get more than one track.

The centre of gravity stays in Vallejo. Too $hort and B-Legit join him on Trunk Is Alive, Celly Cel takes Over Came Em, D-Shot appears on Baptized, and Stresmatic recurs across all four parts. Soul of Vallejo hands the microphone to LaRussell, Daboii, Nef The Pharoah and NYNY, and Night In The Bay pairs Anderson .Paak with Al B. Sure!.

The outside guests are chosen along the same lines rather than for reach. Havoc turns up on Quicksand, Juvenile on Sumn Ain't Right, JasonMartin opens the record on Cuttin Up, G Perico appears on Stand Down, P-Lo on Sucka Ducking and Killer Mike on Get High near the end. The quadruple-album framing is the point as much as the music. E-40 has spent a career treating volume as a virtue and a catalogue as a business, and Turning My Money Over is that argument at full length, with the hip-hop equivalent of a West Coast family reunion on the credits.

He has stayed visible outside his own releases too, most recently when Too Short pitched a two-on-two Verzuz rather than a rematch. The album is logged on the release calendar.
