GRiZ releases the song Sunshine four years after playing it live

GRiZ has released "Sunshine," a studio version of a song fans have been asking for since 2022. It folds dubstep into the vintage saxophone-driven funk that has defined his records, and it had become one of the most requested unreleased tracks in his catalogue.

The song surfaced at Triple Rainbow, the camping festival he hosted in Wisconsin in September 2022. It kept appearing after that, running through 2026 sets at EDC Mexico, Bonnaroo and the Gorge Amphitheatre, which is a long time for a track to live only in a live setting.

The studio version is built around a soaring vocal hook, "I'll be your sunshine," carried by shimmering synth stabs and saxophone lines before the drop hands the melody to a hard bassline. The trick is keeping the uplift intact underneath the weight, which is the balance the whole GRiZ project has run on.

The release lands in one of his busiest stretches. He returned from the indefinite hiatus he announced in June 2023, launched his own festival with Seven Stars, and put out the album Future Funk Vol. 1 in June. A doubleheader at Colorado's Red Rocks Amphitheatre follows in September.

Sitting on a finished song for four years is a choice, and the reasoning is usually the same: a track that works in a field at midnight has to survive headphones on a Tuesday. "Sunshine" was tested harder than most before anyone got to keep it.

The single is filed under electronic, and its date sits on the release calendar. GRiZ has spent the same year headlining the return of the Nashville festival To The Future with Tape B, and Pretty Lights recently debuted an unreleased GRiZ and Tape B remix of a 2011 track live.
