Guitarist John Mayer says he has not sworn off Dead and Company for good

John Mayer set off a week of Grateful Dead fan analysis by saying something that sounded final and then explaining that it was not. Talking to USA Today about his radio programme Grateful Dead Listening Hour, he described going back to his corner, saying the bus had dropped him off and that he now gets to be a lover of the music rather than a member of the band.

The context for that quote was a conversation about being a listener rather than a performer, but it landed at a raw moment. Bob Weir died in January, and Dead and Company's future has been an open question ever since. Fans parsed Mayer's words closely, and the reading that spread was that the band was finished.

In a follow-up interview with Andy Cohen on SiriusXM, Mayer took the sentence apart himself. He said the remark came out of talking about the listening show, and that part of the grieving process is to hang it up. "If you don't hang it up, then you don't grieve fully, so I'm in the process right now," he said.

He then made the distinction he had not made the first time. "I'm not saying, 'You'll never see me on stage doing that,'" he said, adding that he does not know how it would happen yet and does not want to start thinking about actionable ways to do it. He described wanting to wallow a little, and said it is sometimes important to say that a thing is over so you can feel it and mourn it properly.

The clarification does not come with a plan attached, and Mayer was explicit that it does not. What it rules out is the permanent reading. Weir's death is recent enough that scheduling a return would be a strange act of project management, and Mayer's answer amounts to asking for time rather than closing a door.

For the rock audience that follows the band's touring calendar, the practical answer is that nothing is scheduled and nothing is cancelled.
