Lainey Wilson and John Mayer duet on Phone, Keys, Wallet for the first time

Lainey Wilson called John Mayer onstage at The Novo in Los Angeles on Thursday, and the two played Phone, Keys, Wallet together for the first time. Wilson had performed the song live with her own band before, but Mayer had never joined her on it, despite playing guitar on the studio version released on 4 June.

The live split was the same as the record in miniature. Wilson played acoustic guitar and sang lead; Mayer took electric guitar and backing vocals, which is the arrangement the single already had rather than a reworking for the stage.

The setting was a fundraiser rather than a concert. All for the Hall is the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum's benefit, and its Los Angeles edition followed the Nashville guitar pull format, where performers sit in a row, take turns with their own songs and drop into each other's.

Wilson hosted, which explains why so much of the night ran through her. Jelly Roll joined her for Save Me, then Jelly Roll and Lukas Nelson played Heart Like A Truck and 4 X 4 By You together, and Nelson sat in with Wilson on Wildflowers and Wild Horses.

The money goes to the museum's education work, including its Words and Music programme, which puts songwriting into classrooms. That is the reason a benefit like this collects a bill of this size in the first place.
