Julia Jacklin has covered "Every Morning," the 1999 hit from Sugar Ray, for Triple J. It's a song that has mostly faded from rotation, the kind you might not hear for months and then find stuck in your head for hours once you do, which is roughly what happened to Stereogum's Tom Breihan while waiting around an AT&T store this summer, well before Jacklin's version surfaced.
Breihan admitted he had barely thought about "Every Morning" in years despite the song once being inescapable, and said he couldn't otherwise explain why Jacklin would choose it now. Whatever prompted the pick, taking on a late 90s pop-rock hit is a departure from Jacklin's own catalog of spare, confessional indie songwriting.
The cover was recorded for Triple J, the Australian public broadcaster's youth radio station. Jacklin also released a companion video for the cover, giving the Sugar Ray song a visual life alongside the Triple J session.
No word yet on whether the cover will get a wider release beyond the broadcast, and Jacklin has not tied it to any new project of her own. The cover is filed under MusicSuey's indie coverage.
