Julianna Barwick and Mary Lattimore score the ski documentary Threshold

Julianna Barwick and Mary Lattimore have announced their second collaborative album of 2026: a score for Threshold, a documentary about the Olympic cross-country skier Jessie Diggins, directed by the American film-makers Lars and Torsten Brinkema.

Three pieces arrived with the announcement. Cold Open, Sick and Tired and Gallivare 10km are out now, with the full score due on November 20. Gallivare takes its name from the Swedish town that hosts World Cup cross-country racing, which places the music squarely inside the sport.

The pair's debut as a duo, Tragic Magic, came out in January and was followed by a joint tour. Working twice in a year is unusual for two artists whose solo records tend to arrive slowly, and the second project came with a different set of rules.

Lattimore explained the difference. Tragic Magic was limited by the instruments they could use, some of them historic and delicate, but within those limits the pair had total sonic freedom. Threshold reversed that: the instrumentation was open, and the music had to work inside Diggins's life and the directors' vision.

She described holding both projects at once as challenging and mind-expanding, calling them two sides of the same coin in a year spent making music as a duo. That framing explains why the score reads as a companion piece rather than a departure.

Barwick works in layered vocal loops and Lattimore in harp, and a score built from those two elements is a natural fit for endurance footage: long, slow, patient and largely wordless. Sports documentaries usually reach for orchestral swell instead.

The three pieces are on the release calendar ahead of the November date. Both artists sit on the ambient edge of electronic and indie music, and the reissue market has been paying attention to that lineage too, as with Numero Group's edition of Gigi Masin's Wind.
