Kate Nash dates her sixth album Cailin and shares the single Spilt Milk

Kate Nash has named her sixth album Cailin and put out its first song. The record arrives on 22 January 2027 through Kill Rock Stars, the label she signed to at the start of 2024, and the lead single Spilt Milk is out now with a video.

Spilt Milk is about bodily autonomy and where it gets taken away. Nash told DIY the song began as a response to abortion law in Ireland before the repeal of the Eighth Amendment, and described it as being about not being listened to while the forces above you get larger and harder to argue with.

The album took ten years to write and was recorded in Ireland rather than London or Los Angeles. Sessions ran at Stiuideo Cuan on the west coast, with the trad musician Charlie Lennon guiding the work and KoOoLkOjAk producing. The result puts traditional Irish instrumentation next to punk attitude and hip-hop production, which is a combination the singer has not tried before at album length.

The guest list is drawn from the trad world. Niamh Dunne, Lottie Cullen and Aimee Farrell Courtney play on the record, as does Lisa Canny of Biird, and Nash herself returns to the tin whistle, the first instrument she learned. Cailin also carries her 2026 cover of Sinead O'Connor's Famine, a song that asks Britain to account for its part in An Gorta Mor.

Nash has been thin on releases since the Kill Rock Stars signing. The Famine cover and the single Germ, which took on transphobia in 2025, were most of what the label put out from her; the last full album, 9 Sad Symphonies, came in 2024. Cailin is the first record made entirely inside the new deal.

The album title is the Irish word for girl, and the themes DIY lists run through family, forgiveness, colonialism, religion and inherited shame. Nash has described the record as a debt to childhood summers spent in Ireland, which is a long way from the London voice of Made Of Bricks that made her name in 2007.

Live dates are already running. Nash plays Other Voices in Derry on 25 and 26 September, after a sold-out Roundhouse show and appearances at the Fleadh, All Together Now and Galway International Arts Festival; a set of small Irish shows announced recently has already sold out. A Belfast date at Mandela Hall is booked for February 2027.

Anyone tracking what lands in January can follow the release calendar. Cailin joins a busy month at the pop end of the schedule, and it is the second Irish-rooted record this week to come with a story about where it was made, after Fontaines D.C. published the Dopamine Chamber tracklist.
