Fontaines D.C. announce fifth album "Dopamine Chamber," due October 16

Fontaines D.C. have confirmed their follow-up to 2024's Romance. The Dublin band's fifth album, Dopamine Chamber, arrives October 16 through XL Recordings, produced by James Ford, alongside the release of lead single "Marianne." "The album itself is a dopamine chamber," frontman Grian Chatten said of the record.

The rollout started small: a collaged Instagram post captioned with a single numeral, 5, a few days after the band debuted two new songs, "Marianne" and "Six Shot Morning," at a headline show in Cadiz, Spain. That was also the band's first performance since the sudden death of their longtime manager, Trevor Dietz, who had worked with Fontaines D.C. since the group's earliest days and was 47 when he died.

Chatten described Dopamine Chamber as a darker turn from Romance, saying the earlier record felt roughly 60 percent human, with this one closer to 60 percent corrupted by artificial and digital pressures. "I felt it would be more powerful to leave the hope out and reflect the ugliness honestly," he said. Bassist Conor Deegan added that the band's records have always questioned a sense of place, and that this one asks where listeners go to escape.

The single "Marianne" draws in part on the 2024 thriller series Ripley and its themes of escape. It follows a run of shows that has already taken the band from Fontaines D.C. playing the BBC's last live session at Maida Vale to a summer of European festival dates, and it continues with headline slots at Reading and Leeds, a homecoming set at Electric Picnic, and a short run of U.S. shows at Shaky Knees, Sea.Hear.Now and Ohana before a full Dopamine Chamber tour is expected to be announced.

A wider headline tour to support the album is expected in the weeks ahead, though no dates have been confirmed yet. In the meantime, fans can already hear the band road-testing the new material, including at the show where Kurt Vile joined Fontaines D.C. onstage at La Route Du Rock earlier this month.
