Leithauser and Rostam tour their duo album as it turns ten

Ten years after making an album together, Hamilton Leithauser and Rostam are finally touring it. The pair have booked eleven North American dates in November, opening at the 9:30 Club in Washington DC, the city both of them come from, and finishing at Pacific Electric in Los Angeles on 19 November.

The timing is deliberate. I Had a Dream That You Were Mine came out in October 2016 through Glassnote, so the run starts days before its tenth anniversary. Aside from a handful of shows in Los Angeles and New York around the original release, the two have never taken the record on the road.

The record brought together two people who already had day jobs at the centre of indie rock. Leithauser was the howling voice of the Walkmen; Rostam was a songwriter and producer in Vampire Weekend. What they made together fit neither band, moving through doo-wop, country rock, baroque pop, folk and torch song with Rostam's production framing a voice with an unusual amount of range to frame.

The tour comes with a new recording rather than a reissue. The two reunited this summer at Power Station, the New York studio formerly known as Avatar, to film a stripped-down piano version of In a Black Out, directed and edited by Andy Swartz.

The routing takes in Philadelphia, Woodstock, Somerville, Toronto, Detroit, Chicago and San Francisco, with two consecutive nights at Brooklyn's Music Hall of Williamsburg on 9 and 10 November. That venue is due to close, which gives those two dates a second reason to sell.

Support is split across the run. Sam and Louise Sullivan open most of the early dates, Johanna Samuels takes Philadelphia, Toronto, Detroit and Chicago, Madra Salach plays the Washington opener, and the two West Coast shows are still to be filled. Tickets went on sale on 23 September at 10am local time.

Both musicians have been busy separately this year. Rostam released his third solo album, American Stories, through Matsor Projects in May; Leithauser has been running a 16-night residency at Cafe Carlyle, his longest yet at the room, and his most recent album This Side of the Island was co-produced with Aaron Dessner of the National and Anna Stumpf.
