Singer Lionel Richie says he's "doing well" after health scare paused his tour

Lionel Richie says he is "doing well" after an unspecified health issue forced him to pause part of his summer tour with Earth, Wind & Fire, the Los Angeles Times reported. The 77-year-old singer thanked fans on Instagram for their support, writing that he was "grateful for all of you" after a scare in late June sent him offstage mid-concert.

The episode began during a show at the Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, Minnesota, where Richie repeatedly sat down while performing "Dancing on the Ceiling" and told the crowd he felt dizzy. Saxophonist Dino Soldo later told the audience Richie was not feeling well enough to continue, and paramedics reportedly took him to a nearby hospital as a precaution, according to TMZ. He went on to postpone shows at Chicago's United Center and the Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio, before returning to the stage on June 30 in Pittsburgh.

Richie, a Grammy winner whose catalog spans pop and R&B and soul with hits like "Hello" and "All Night Long," announced the joint arena tour with Earth, Wind & Fire through Live Nation back in January, with 26 stops including Chicago, Orlando, San Francisco and Los Angeles. The run is scheduled to reach Inglewood's Intuit Dome on August 9 before wrapping August 14 at the Moody Center in Austin, Texas.

Since returning from the health scare, Richie has kept a steady pace across the U.S. and Canada, playing shows in Pittsburgh, Detroit, Toronto and Montreal before his next stop in Boston. He called the recent run "an absolute joy," telling fans the energy and the dancing at each stop made for real memories.

Richie has not said what caused the health issue, and neither he nor his team have offered further medical detail beyond his Instagram message thanking fans for their support. His tour with Earth, Wind & Fire continues through the rest of the summer, with the pair still slated to play Los Angeles's Intuit Dome before closing out the run in Austin.
