Luke Bryan marks his album Signs with a Live From Roku City set

Luke Bryan has taped a performance for Live From Roku City, and it goes up on 19 September, a day after his ninth album arrived. Signs was released on 18 September through MCA, and the set is the first piece of promotion attached to it.

The song choices are not what a new-album showcase usually looks like. Bryan plays Play It Again and Country and She Knows It, then covers Where Everybody Knows Your Name, the theme from Cheers, which is a piece of television nostalgia rather than anything from the record.

That fits the format. Roku City is the animated skyline that appears on Roku screensavers, and the performance series stages artists against it, so a song about a bar where everyone knows your name is the kind of joke the setting invites.

Bryan said he had a blast performing against what he called the iconic Roku City skyline, and thanked the platform for letting him reach fans and Roku users in an interactive way. Lisa Holme, head of content at Roku Media, said Bryan "knows how to turn any stage into a celebration".

For a streaming platform, a series like this is a way to turn a screensaver into a destination. For an artist, it is a set of performances delivered straight to millions of television screens on release week, which is a different reach from a late-night slot.
