Mitchell Tenpenny has a benefit show at the Grand Ole Opry on 6 October, and five dollars from every ticket sold goes to the 10Penny Fund, the foundation he set up to support cancer patients and their families through emotional, social and mental health care.
The bill is heavier than a typical benefit. Alongside Tenpenny, the night carries Chris Young, Lee Brice, Devin Dawson, Ernest, Jackie Lee and Jo Dee Messina, which is a run of Nashville names that would fill the room on their own. Macy Page, a cancer survivor, serves as guest announcer; this site reported earlier this year that Thomas Rhett's sister-in-law was clear of cancer, and MusicRow describes Page as Rhett's sister-in-law.
Tenpenny was direct about why the fund exists and what it was built to fix. "I have several personal experiences with family members facing cancer diagnoses and treatment," he said, describing a gap in support for processing the range of emotions involved, both for himself and for watching family members go through the same thing. The foundation was set up to fill that gap where it can.
The night does not end with the Opry show. A post-show event runs in the Opry House's Studio A, where Tenpenny plays a few more songs and takes part in a question and answer session hosted by WSM's Charlie Mattos. Entry works on an unusual mechanism: fans who buy an event poster from the Opry Shop that evening get into Studio A with it.
The same date carries a second announcement. Tenpenny launches a partnership with the Cancer Support Community, an organisation formed in 2009 from the merger of The Wellness Community and Gilda's Club Worldwide, which connects patients and families with licensed professionals for emotional, social and practical support at no cost. That gives the fund a delivery partner rather than leaving it as a grant-making body.
The Opry has spent this year handing its stage to causes and tributes as often as to debuts, and the wider industry has been doing the same: the T.J.
