Taylor Swift takes the first MTV VMA Artist Director honour for her music videos

Taylor Swift will be the first person to receive the MTV VMA Artist Director Honors, a category MTV invented and announced on the same day, five days before the ceremony it will be handed out at. The network says the award recognises a sustained and influential body of work from artists who have pushed creative boundaries and developed a clear directorial voice.

The case for her is a real one rather than a courtesy. Swift has directed The Man, cardigan, willow, All Too Well: The Short Film, Anti-Hero, Bejeweled, Fortnight, Karma, Lavender Haze, Opalite and The Fate of Ophelia, and her four Best Direction wins at the VMAs are a record in the category, ahead of David Fincher's three. She is nominated there again this year for Opalite.

The outlets disagree on how many times she has been up for it. Rolling Stone counts eight Best Direction nominations, which includes this year's; MusicRow and That Grape Juice both say seven. The wins are consistent across all four accounts at four.

There is a commercial reading of the timing, and Stereogum makes it plainly: MTV does what it can each year to get Swift into the room, because a ceremony she attends becomes a ceremony about her. Creating an award that only she can win first is an efficient way to ask. That does not make the directing credits less real, and it does explain why the announcement arrived in the week of the show rather than in the month of it.

The 2026 VMAs air live from Los Angeles on Sunday 27 September at 7:30pm ET on CBS, MTV and Paramount+, with Snoop Dogg hosting and a global stream following the next day. Madonna, Lisa, Raye, Gunna and Shaboozey are among the confirmed performers, and Nirvana take this year's Video Vanguard award. Swift carries nine nominations into the night, including Artist of the Year, with The Fate of Ophelia up for Video of the Year.
