The band Mumford & Sons brought actor Jason Sudeikis onstage during their Madison Square Garden show on August 11, and the two sang the Ted Lasso theme song together, NME reported. Sudeikis, the show's co-creator and star, was in the crowd before frontman Marcus Mumford brought him up, first slapping bandmate Ben Lovett on the rear end; the crowd cheered through the performance, and Mumford hugged Sudeikis at the end before he returned to his seat.
Later in the night, actor Oscar Isaac also joined the band, this time for "Dink's Song (Fare Thee Well)," his collaboration with Mumford from the 2014 Inside Llewyn Davis soundtrack, SPIN reported. It marked the first time Mumford & Sons have played the song live; Isaac has performed with the band several times over the years and appeared in their recent "Here" video.
Mumford wrote the Ted Lasso theme song, which was nominated for an Emmy in 2021, and has contributed multiple pieces of music to the show over the years, including 2020's "You'll Never Walk Alone." Mumford also joked to the crowd earlier in the set that he would "sic Ted on you" if they didn't quiet down. Sudeikis made a separate cameo last month, appearing in character during the World Cup final halftime show organized by Coldplay's Chris Martin.
Violinist Rob Moose backed the band throughout the night with new string arrangements he had debuted on their Amazon Music Songline performance; he also guested with the group at Chicago's Wrigley Field in June. Mumford & Sons also opened a pop-up store and photo gallery a few blocks from Madison Square Garden for the run of shows, offering 10 "golden tickets" hidden in purchased merchandise, with prizes including lifetime concert tickets and a meet and greet.
The Madison Square Garden dates come in support of Mumford & Sons' sixth studio album, Prizefighter, released in June and featuring Hozier, Gracie Abrams, Chris Stapleton and Gigi Perez. The band brought out other guests, including Shania Twain and Hozier, during their BST Hyde Park show in London last month, and returns to MSG for further shows, part of a busy year of rock news.
