The Grand Theft Auto 6 soundtrack has stopped being a rumour, and Travis Scott is on the front of it. Rockstar Games and Atlantic Records put out six songs on Thursday 17 September and confirmed that the full album holds 34 original tracks, arriving on 19 November, the same day as the game.
His track is the marquee cut. RHYNO is produced by Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo of Daft Punk, which is the first production credit under that name in some time. Alongside it came That's It by Yung Lean, featuring Future over a Metro Boomin instrumental, and Sexy Magic, a house track pairing the Argentine duo CA7RIEL and Paco Amoroso with PinkPantheress, Fred again.. and the French producer Etienne de Crecy.
The other three go in three different directions. Morgan Wallen contributed Last Thing You Need; Rauw Alejandro turned in Macacoa 2000, which Remezcla describes as a throwback to reggaeton's golden age; and Keith Richards covered Jimmy Reed's 1961 blues Bright Lights, Big City. Rolling Stone notes that no recording date or location came with the Richards track, so whether it dates from the Foreign Tongues or Hackney Diamonds sessions is unknown.
Rockstar says the 34 songs were written to capture what it calls the electric energy of the game's Vice City and Leonida settings, and that the album arrives alongside a new generation of the in-game radio stations the series is known for. Atlantic, which sits inside Warner Music Group, assembled the roster.
The physical editions are unusually elaborate. Atlantic is selling a limited liquid-filled vinyl, a splatter pressing and a CD jewel case, with further retail-exclusive variants through Blood Records, Best Buy, Walmart, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Target, Urban Outfitters and independent stores, each with its own artwork and poster. Indie Hoy reports the limited edition listed at $124.98, against $49.98 for standard vinyl and $19.98 for the CD.
The commercial stakes for the artists involved are not theoretical. NME reports that Captain & Tennille's But I Think It's A Dream saw global streams rise by 130,730% in the three days after the game's Extended Look trailer used it. A place on the album is worth considerably more than a sync fee.
The full tracklist has not been published. Six of 34 songs are out, the rest are being held to the release, and the album is on the release calendar for 19 November.
