Dave Grohl helped pay for Corrosion of Conformity drummer Reed Mullin to go to rehab, Pepper Keenan said on Suicide Silence guitarist Chris Garza's podcast, Metal Injection reported on August 4. "Dave Grohl offered help, Dave Grohl had helped him with rehab, paid for it out of his own pocket, which was very kind," Keenan said. Mullin died in January 2020 at age 53, after struggling with alcohol-related health problems, including seizures tied to substance abuse.
Keenan sings and plays guitar in Corrosion of Conformity, the North Carolina crossover thrash band Mullin co-founded and drummed for. Mullin's last album with the group was 2018's No Cross No Crown.
Grohl and Mullin's bond went back further than the rehab help. In 2014, both played in the metal supergroup Teenage Time Killers alongside Slipknot's Corey Taylor, former Queens of the Stone Age bassist Nick Oliveri, Lamb of God's Randy Blythe and former Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra. The group's debut album, Teenage Time Killers: Greatest Hits Vol. 1, was recorded at Grohl's own Studio 606 and released in July 2015.
Keenan and C.O.C. guitarist Woody Weatherman still swap stories about Mullin's drumming. "We have nothing but wonderful stories about Reed," Keenan said, calling him one of the originators of the crossover sound the band helped invent and someone who could not be touched for creativity when he was at the top of his game. Keenan added that he was thankful the band got back together to make one more record with Mullin before he died.
Corrosion of Conformity are currently touring Europe, with shows this week in Cologne and Berlin before dates at the Brutal Assault festival in the Czech Republic and the Palp Festival in Switzerland. They return to the United States to play Aftershock in California in October, and have a run of Australian dates booked for January 2027. Grohl's own band, Foo Fighters opened their 2026 stadium tour in Toronto the night before Keenan's interview was published.
