Remi Wolf describes a "clean and clear" feeling behind new album Mud

Remi Wolf has announced Mud, her third studio album, due October 9 via Island Records, describing the process of making it in stark terms. "I literally felt like I was covered in shit," Wolf said. "And now, at the end of the album process, I feel so clean and clear."

The 11-track record follows "Twiggy," Wolf's first single in the two years since 2024's Big Ideas, which she had already debuted live the previous weekend during a surprise appearance at Hayley Williams's set at the Newport Folk Festival. "I wrote 'Twiggy' about people I've been with that lack both butts and emotional availability," she said of the song.

The record took shape after Wolf reconsidered not just what she wanted to say but how she wanted to make music, following years of near-constant touring, writing and recording. Early sessions in Nashville gave way to a retreat in Big Bear, California, with longtime collaborator Jared Solomon and friends Jack DeMeo, Jamie McLaughlin and Gigi Grombacher, a group that organically became what Wolf calls a "family band" over shared meals and passed-around microphones.

That communal approach carried through the rest of the album's creation. The group reconvened at Electric Lady Studios in New York before a final session in Joshua Tree, recording live and largely in the same room to favor spontaneity over polish, with Wolf frequently sitting in behind the drum kit herself.

Mud's 11 tracks are "Bottle," "Champagne," "Twiggy," "Burn Me Blue," "Jamie," "Covered In Mud," "Moon So High," "I Won't Cry," "Wine Drunk," "Guess" and "Yellow Rose," with Pitchfork also sharing a new video for opening track "Bottle."

Mud follows Wolf's 2021 debut, Juno, and its 2024 follow-up, Big Ideas, and arrives after Wolf built a touring resume that includes Coachella, Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo alongside stints supporting Paramore, Lorde and Olivia Rodrigo. She also made her screen debut this year in Amazon Prime Video's Off Campus, appearing in the show's premiere alongside several of her songs.
