Revocation put Data Corpse in a cyber dystopia for its video

Revocation have put out a video for Data Corpse, and the song underneath it is about what happens to a private life once companies have finished mining it. The technical death metal band set the clip in a collapsed cyber future, with vocalist and guitarist Dave Davidson turning into a mutant cyborg on screen.

Davidson is direct about the subject. He says the song is about social media companies constantly scouring personal lives for profit, and that people give up more of themselves every year in exchange for being sold a shinier pair of shoes until what is left of private life has been picked to the bone.

The visual references are specific. Davidson says his transformation was influenced by imagery from classic cyberpunk films, naming Tetsuo and Akira, and that the band worked again with the team at MyGoodEye, a production outfit they have used before rather than a first-time hire.

The song is not new. Data Corpse comes from New Gods, New Masters, the band's most recent album, and Metal Injection describes it as one of the standouts on that record, which is the usual reason a track gets a video months after release rather than at launch.

Musically it does what the subject asks of it. The track is built on propulsive guitar chugs with screamed vocals, and the frustration in the delivery is the point rather than an artefact of the genre; a song about being ground down by an interface has to sound like being ground down.

The timing is tied to the road. Revocation are in the middle of the 20 Years Of Torment North American tour with Defeated Sanity, Fuming Mouth and Weeping, which runs from Western Canada through the US west coast and across the country, finishing in Philadelphia on 10 October.

Twenty years is the frame for the whole campaign. The band have spent 2026 marking the anniversary in interviews and features, and a video built around a mutating frontman is a reasonable way to mark two decades without turning it into a retrospective.
