Jaymin has released "Rollin," the latest preview of STATIC, the EP AllHipHop reports is arriving in September through Warner Records. It follows "Proud," which he put out in July, and his debut EP "Sweet Nothings."
He grew up in South Seattle singing with his family, in a house where gospel sat next to classic secular soul. Years of picking up instruments shaped an approach that pulls the bounce of throwback new jack swing together with warm 1980s production, heavy bass and rap-influenced vocal cadences.
"Rollin" was co-produced by the Seattle beatmaker Sango and longtime collaborator Chase N. Cashe. It sits at the point where wanting someone collides with not knowing what happens next, and Jaymin turns the hook from Gucci Mane's "Pillz" into a late-night question about whether the other person is in it for the long haul.
"Proud," the July single co-produced by Hollywood Cole and Ayex, worked the other side of the same subject: accountability, and the mistakes that crack a relationship open. Read together, the two songs sketch the questions STATIC appears set to work through.
Much contemporary R&B and soul trades in emotional detachment. Jaymin writes toward the opposite, and AllHipHop frames "Rollin" as a deepening of that. The EP is tracked on the release calendar alongside other autumn records including Dawn Richard's Creole Culture, and he joins a busy stretch for Seattle acts that also produced Chinese American Bear's new song.
