Sophia Stel has returned with the single "Now I've Got A Lot...", out now through A24 Music. The Vancouver artist built her breakout project, How To Win A Solitaire, during after-hours shifts at a DIY venue called Paradise, deviant lo-fi electronics that drew comparisons to early Grimes and spread mostly by word of mouth. Paradise has since shut down, but Stel's rise has kept going without it.
The new single is self-produced and self-written, and Clash described it as an emphatically personal piece of avant-pop that leaves the rough edges in rather than smoothing them over. It functions as a kind of status update, a reflection on how much has shifted in her life over a short span of time.
That shift includes opening for Lorde at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles in May and a headline international tour of her own. The accompanying video for the single features Stel's two younger brothers and documents that stretch of the last six months.
Stel is also set to appear at PC Music's Pop Crypt festival this Halloween, alongside Dorian Electra and A. G. Cook, putting her in company with some of the producers whose sound helped shape her own avant-pop leanings. The single follows her earlier one-off track "Molly In The Club," continuing a run of standalone releases rather than a full album rollout so far.
