Sy'Rai Smith releases her debut EP Cold War, eight tracks on Hitmaker

Sy'Rai Smith has finally packaged her work into a project. Cold War, an eight-track EP, came out on Friday, August 28 through Hitmaker Music Group, and it is the 24-year-old singer's first full body of work after roughly a decade of standalone singles. That Grape Juice and YouKnowIGotSoul both covered the release.

The build-up was slow by design. Late Night and Bullseye (Nice Shot) both landed well enough to suggest what a longer project would sound like, and both are folded into the EP rather than left behind as one-offs.

Her own description of it is about timing rather than sound. "COLD WAR feels like the most honest introduction I could give people to who I am right now," she said, describing an age at which she is working out what she wants, what she deserves and what she is prepared to let go of.

The sequencing follows that arc. It opens with the pointed Mind Ya Business, moves into the more reflective We Already Knew That, then widens through Stimulation, Swimming Pools and the title track, with a guest appearance from Shakespeare! on Paragon.

The lineage is the part everyone leads with. Smith is the daughter of Brandy, and she has neither leaned on that nor pretended it away, working instead toward a voice that reads as her own while acknowledging where she comes from.

Her mother has stayed busy in the meantime, most recently singing the theme for Netflix's A Different World sequel. Debut projects from R&B singers have been arriving steadily, alongside returns like Jacquees' Mood 2. Releases are logged in the release calendar, with more on the rnb-soul hub.
