Tanya Tucker went to the Texas Senate on 29 July 2026 to argue against a plan to run 765kV transmission lines through her land, and finished by singing to the committee.
The state is proposing lines that would cross numerous properties, hers among them, with consequences she says would fall on wildlife and other natural resources. She first raised it publicly on social media on 21 July, then appeared in person before the Senate Committee on Business and Commerce, travelling from Nashville where she has been shooting a film.
She was born in Seminole, in the southern part of the Texas Panhandle, and now owns a ranch near Briggs, about an hour north of Austin. She described it to the committee as their little piece of Texas heaven, with horses, animals and the prettiest sunsets she had seen, and said she shot her last album cover there.
The tone turned once she got to the substance. "I'm sad," she told the room, "but I'm mad." She said she was disappointed in how the matter had been handled, and that rushing in and turning someone's life upside down is not the way things are done in Texas.
She then widened it past her own property. She said she wanted to speak for people who could not be at the hearing, some of whom had not been notified and some of whom could not afford lawyers, and asked the committee to take a longer look at other options before disrupting so many lives. She framed the whole objection around wanting a stronger power grid for a state she loves.
She had opened by saying she was not there to sing and wanted to talk heart to heart, Texan to Texan. She closed by taking that back and performing Texas (When I Die), her 1978 hit, without accompaniment.
Tucker has spent a career navigating rooms full of powerful men, starting with her first hit, Delta Dawn, at 13. What the hearing showed is that a disarming smile can still work better than a sneer. More country coverage sits on our country hub, including Garth Brooks selling out arenas in a weak ticketing year and Kane Brown pulling an eight-year-old on stage.
